Sludge / Post-Metal / Doom
Over the past few years, JS Donny - whether she wants it or not - has become a pivotal figure in the post-COVID Franco-Belgian-Swiss underground, bringing together people and sounds that rarely mingle, in the most genuine way possible. Navigating with equal joy the realms of metal and European leftfield electronics, she created her own very peculiar language - "post-metal" - that eventually crystallized into her brilliant and smartly titled Death Folk debut album. Born from the ashes of Donna Candy and out of friendship with the Swiss band Radon, this VOL. 1 offers something I’ve never heard before and even have trouble naming: a mix of heavy sludge rock and a kind of post-nu-metal sound (sorry for the chin-stroking), culminating in the anthemic “Love Kills Conscious Body”, whose rich production sound echoes the electronic zeitgeist. Three bands, sitting together on a compilation out of genuine love and friendship, playing mildly terrifying music in the most generous possible way.
