For Red Riverbank is now the third entry in one of the series of releases that have stayed closest to my heart, ever since the 2021 release of Before I Glare Up At The Sun Through The Top Soil. Little-known, due to the elusiveness of the previous two albums (released as very limited CDs and tapes), the duo has all the makings of a cult band, idiosyncratically blending scraggy noise rock Wind in the Willows motifs and other Beatrix Potter-adjacent imagery.
Reeking of jolly nights in the most charming pubs and eerie evenings in some West Midlands inn, the music of Café OTO affiliates Rory Salter and Ben Victor Waggett has come to represent, for me, the ultimate expression of South London DIY music. It offers a particularly bewitching take on a long-standing tradition of British pastoral eeriness (which includes the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Virginia Astley, The KLF’s Chill Out, C.W. Vrtacek…). Slightly drifting from the literalism of their previous two releases, For Red Riverbank widens their scope, exploring fuzzy and psychedelic rock territories more frankly. A massive shout-out to the label, Bison Records, for finally bringing the duo's music to the LP format! A classic trilogy in my eyes. (M/M : shops, ask for wholesale)
