Before becoming a jazz fusion mogul with a series of releases on ECM, The Minneapolis-based guitarist Steve Tibbetts self-released a splendid album of soft psychedelic guitar. Conjuring the ghosts of annoying prog-rock and boring jazz fusion all at once, an essential and rare record. Highest recommendation!
I'm not a sucker for A) guitar-based 1970's fusion (John Mclaughlin Et al.), B) hippie prog-rock, but this Tibbetts's self-titled and self-released debut album conjugates these ingredients so brilliantly that I have to give in. It feels like he knows that with such explosive material, one has to play a careful game of equilibrium, and Tibbets plays that game to perfection. He channels such a raw energy into soft, delicate guitar loops, only letting off a burst of untamed psychedelia at the very end of the record.
Weird and defintely eerie, Steve Tibbetts is a grandiose work of retenue, nonetheless lyrical. It's all very well entangled, songs beautifully overlaping each other. Both one of the best prog records and one of the best fusion records I know. (VG+/VG+)
