Deardogs - LP
France, 2025
Bass / Grime / Dub
White Label - Limited to 100 exl.
Latest vinyl issue from Deardogs after a couple of digital only releases (Oto Ninski, Zulu) comes in the form of a hundred copies of a 2000s grime-looking white label. 4 subterranean stompers by Archaic Vaults fonder Severin Black that screams "British Bass Music", but that weirdly feel at home on the Parisian imprint.
The two mixes of "Lord Have Mercy" offer a digital dub experience as dark and hazy as it can eventually get, quite obviously following the path sets by UK digital warriors Irration Steppas, and, more recently, John T. Gast and his 5 Gate Temple associates. Equally hazy but relying on a somewhat lighter beat, “Theaster Gat (Verse II)” vaguely recalls early 2000’s instrumentals, the kind that blurred the line between hip hop and electronic music - at a time when it was still a sacrilegious thing to do (thank you Pharrell, Timbaland, DJ Medhi for permanently breaking that barrier): typical dawn or dusk music. “Brass VIP” stands on the other side of the spectrum, unapologetically embracing the ultra heaviness of, say TNT Roots. It's been a while since we'd got to hear a heavy sounding 12" of new bass music, and though it sounds like an insane idea, economically speaking, we're glad some people are still bold enough to do it! Limited to 100 ex. (M/M - wholesale: shops, contact us)
