Released in 2025 on digital at that time of the year, Rita P’s debut album finally makes it to vinyl via Braden Well's Jane Records. Known to some for her work in Bar Italia, the Denmark-raised and London-based musician gives to hear a much more genre-blurring take on recent days’ reinterpretations of 1990’s alternative sounds and tropes than most of her contemporaries, stretching the referential scope from foggy trip hop-adjacent electronic experiments by Leila, Portishead or early Boards of Canada to Rid Of Me era PJ Harvey and The Cure’s greyest moments (Seventeen Seconds). The stone she carves is nonetheless a highly coherent block of contemporary sludge and one of the most solid albums to come out of a "scene" that has been notorious for its dilettantism and perfunctoriness.

Oscillating between cold nonchalance (“Rita’s Pest”) - recalling Lolina’s recent works (Music Is The Drug for instance) -  and feverish vocal commitment (“Rita’s Pop”), Rita’s Purse is a work of autobiographical fiction, broken down into 13 sulfuric shorts. It's an Oulipian list dipped in hazy paranoia and fuzzy guitars, each track revealing a different facet of Rita, not exactly matching the others. Sustained by a nagging bass, backed by relatively minimal arrangements - in a way that strongly reminds me of The Cure's compact and straight-to-the-point Seventeen Seconds album - Rita P's deep vocals are delivered in a vaguely menacing way; though somehow rough and fragile, her voice gives to hear a confidence, a threatening sensuality that fully reveals itself on her most uptempo songs.

Rita's Purse, turns out to be a surprisingly mature piece of work, a very carefully laid album rather than a collection of singles and fillers (a rare thing, especially for a debut LP) revolving around undeniably venomous underground hits (Rita's Pop, Rita's Poser). (wholesale: shops, contact us)
