Modern Classical / Experimental
Rachel's debut LP, showcasing their then radically new crossover of modern classical and post-rock, a post-modern revision of 20th Century American music probably influenced by Angelo Badalamenti / David Lynch, and that would itself influence a cohort of experimentalists, from Tori Kudo's Maher Shalal Has Baz, to Jim O' Rourke and Eiko Ishibashi and, more recently, acts like TLF Trio. Warmly Recommended.
Ample, eerie and disquieting, Handwriting summons the Old Continent's modernist ghosts, for ever wandering in one of these dedalean and baroque thermal places : Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain, Robert Walser's Institute Benjamenta, Alain Resnais' Marienbad, and, of course WG Sebald's devastated Europe. Hauntological, Handwriting is a cautionary tell, barely subliminal when it recalls the deportation trains and other apparatus of the all-destroying capitalist machine. (VG+/VG+)
