A semaphor in the French underground skies, Pierre Bastien is a model of integrity, humble and ceaselessly radical in his approach to improvisation, instruments making and souvenir music. His latest release on Belgian imprint ESITU echoes in many ways his 1988 classic on Auf Dem Nil, Mecanium: rich sonic landscapes, filled with mechanical birds and Raymond Roussel's machines, a tribute to his trustworthy Meccano screwdriver. The album nonetheless departs from the barrel organ and other perforated cards fantasies usually associated with the toy music scene Pierre Bastien, alongside Pascal Comelade or Klimperei, championed over 30 years ago, embracing more abstract ideals, broad and lyrical, in a way that recalls Rafael Toral's recent Spectral Evolution and Travelling Light, as well as the post-exoticism of Antoine Volodine and Jon Hassel.'s 1980's Fourth World recordings. "On my end, I had to sooner or later pay a similar tribute to the tool that allowed for the crafting of the Mecanium, from 1976 to this day.
