South of North - LP
Netherlands, 2025
Experimental / Field Recordings / Guitar
Scattered bits of sounds, noises and atmospheres collected and generated by Madrid musicians / underground music activists Pablo Mirón and Juan Vacas. Walking in the footsteps of Graham Lambkin, the duo pastes all sorts of heteroclite elements (guitars, harmonicas, violins, field recordings, an FM Radio, etc.) onto blank canvases, creating from scratch vast and pensive soundscape. Latest transmission from the always great South Of North label.
A world of white noise backing three chords of guitars. Liminal music for an age of perpetual commute. Relatively guitar-centered, En Perpetua revolves around a set of nagging, didly hallucinogenic ballads, (‘En Perpetua II’, ‘Daddy’s Booze’, ‘Alegria de Vivir’), flirting with the lo-fi loner blues of Simon Joyner. Colliding mundane sounds with sacred - religious even (‘St. Alban’) - ambiances, Miradasvacas navigates the same desolate emptiness than UK post-rock acts Hood (recently mentioned here) or Crescent.
A beautiful addition to the catalogue of one of the most exciting labels in recent years, the Amsterdam-based - recently relocated to Paris - South Of North and to a long-lasting history of music that is unpurposely metaphysical, nonchalantly depicting a very Macbethian world:
“All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts”
Incredible hand assembled sleeve ! A labour of love, too. (M/M)
