Earworm - LP
UK, 1998
Post-Rock / Leftfield / Electronic

Eerie, compelling 1998 post-rock debut album on UK label Earworm, bathed in a beautifully strange atmosphere. One of these albums, hard to pin down or to fully comprehend but that irresistibly grows on the listener. Connecting dots between the liminal post-rock of Tortoise and European indie pop, as released on Shinkansen or Elefant Records. Great from start to finish: Highest recommendation.

Exactly the kind of records we're unconditionally supporting here: puzzling, unclassifiable and seductive, from a band we've never heard of (probably German). One of the many short-lived bands, that, at the turn of the century, did their very own synthesis of the musical Zeitgest, conjugating anything with anything, fuzzy guitars with soothing electronics, MPC's and tape recorders.

Released in 1998, Ma Chérie For Painting's debut album, is among the records that inaugurate a definitive blind spot for music history and diggers, a period that slightly precedes the heydays of music blogs (roughly 1997-2004), a time when musicians could indiscriminately borrow elements from pop and avant garde scenes, and no one would fear having a hard time labeling the product of such experimentations. Catch-all labels like Post-rock or Electronic music were satisfying enough. In a way, I feel these times of careless hybridation find a strong echo in today's indie scenes, whose latest mutations followed the downfall of blog culture and music medias in general. (VG+/VG+)
