Boards Of Canada - The Campfire Headphase

After the ambient / trip-hop-leaning sound of  Music Has The Right Children and the eerie and weirdly threatening  Geogaddi, Boards of Canada's third LP on Warp leans toward a post-shoegaze sound featuring heavily treated guitars and drums. It also channels some of their British folk influences (justifying the fact that they often name The Incredible String Band as one of their favorite bands).

To quote Simon Reynolds:"blurring the boundaries between rock and techno is a smart move, because BoC have always made music that deserved to appeal beyond the electronic audience". It disarmed critics when it got out, most of them regretting the dissolution of BoC's sound into Pitchfork-friendly fuzzy guitar-leaning rock. I tend to think that time proved them wrong, as it is to me one of their releases that aged the better. Definitely my favourite of their classic albums, and perhaps the record I listened to the most in 2025. One of these extremely pleasing records (a 2xLP!) to play from start to finish.
