Some seriously deep cuts, as part of a couple of US College compilations tipped by our friend DJ Sundae. Poetry, folk songs, sound art, released in 1972 by TARGET - the student arts and literary publication of Bloomfield College, New Jersey. It includes a few heart-crushing ballads, evidently recalling Julien Dechery and DJ Sundae's compilation Sky Girl (do we need to say that it's one of the very best compilations ever made?) but the whole listening experience is hypnagogic and really encapsulates this dolling, almost hypnotic quality a lot of lo-fi US cultural productions from the 1970's have. I'm thinking about these fever dreams of cable TV programs - I believe some call it ambient TV. This Target Anthology is probably ambient then, but in a very different way than the way defined by Eno. It's unknowingly ambient. (VG+/VG+)
