Stars aligned in the European DIY sky in the last months of 2025 and the Orion Music Workshop X Kashual Plastik tape, that was supposed to happen one day or another, was brought into our world in the cold days before Christmas.
Tom Val's 60min retranscription of his live performance spreads over the two sides of a tape, precariously packed in a white matchbox covered in crimson glyphs. Precariousness is actually a fitting theme to introduce one to the music of Orion Music Workshop, a one man orchestra with his cohort of out-of-tune synths, trinkets and flutes, scavenged and channeled into deep, wintery incantations. And so is the matchbox motive: just like in The Little Match Girl, Tom Val plays with the tiniest and the most fragile elements to spark a faint but vivid magic - and just like in Andersen’s tale, fatality and death are never far.
