A trio made up of \u003cstrong\u003eShelter\u003c\/strong\u003e, one third of improvised rock band \u003cstrong\u003eHWYUIOD\u003c\/strong\u003e; and \u003cstrong\u003eBrittany Dubson\u003c\/strong\u003e \u0026amp; \u003cstrong\u003eMathieu Deschênes\u003c\/strong\u003e, both musicians in Montreal experimental music collective \u003cstrong\u003eMOAB\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThese captured moments of p\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eure improvisations, infused with unclear spontaneity, evoke the French underground rock born in the aftermath of Mai 68 events; mostly \u003cstrong\u003eMahogany Brain\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eRed Noise\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eFille Qui Mousse\u003c\/strong\u003e, or also \u003cstrong\u003eDashiell Hedayat\u003c\/strong\u003e at his most experimental moments. Those records that kept something special in their spontaneity, their exuberance and the unapologetic « let’s put this jam on a record » attitude.. Much of it thrived thanks to that cultural ferment of the time, nourised by the french hippies and first independant labels - \u003cstrong\u003eSaravah\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eFutura\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eBYG\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eShandar\u003c\/strong\u003e... or through self-publishing and local production.. Shelter extends that lineage today, producing this record on his own imprint \u003cstrong\u003eProtopost\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eBut we’re no longer in a free-jazz, world-music influenced rock territory like the bands I mentioned earlier. Raya 13 leans instead toward a kind of naked-shoegaze without sustained notes, without drums and with only the faintest trace of distortion. A psychedelism distillied to its purest essence, and a fragile emotional sensitivity akin to the melancholy we found in \u003cstrong\u003eTanz Mein Herz\u003c\/strong\u003e’s pagan folk-rock or in \u003cstrong\u003eJemima\u003c\/strong\u003e’s hauntological rock. These brief fragments feel like found relics, always in danger of vanishing. Inevitably, we also hear echoes of infuence of early \u003cstrong\u003eSonic Youth\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eSun City Girls\u003c\/strong\u003e or \u003cstrong\u003eYoung Marble Giants\u003c\/strong\u003e; and the great golden age post-rock bands like \u003cstrong\u003eLabradford\u003c\/strong\u003e or \u003cstrong\u003eSlint\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ePure unpretentious and graceful stoner music : Raya 13 recalls the flickering beauty of \u003cstrong\u003eDerek Jarman\u003c\/strong\u003e fragmentary super-8 films and the almost desolate atmosphere of early \u003cstrong\u003eWerner Herzog\u003c\/strong\u003e's transposed in the damp French countryside in the 2025 summer.
