This debut album largely surpasses expectations: 31 minutes of visceral, profound and superbly recorded (mixed \u0026amp; mastered) dark and hypnotizing folk fronted by JS Donny’s idiosyncratic singing. \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eAn album perfectly defined by its title, Death Folk, that I can’t really compare to anything, but that sits somewhere between \u003cstrong\u003eBohren \u0026amp; Der Club of Gore\u003c\/strong\u003e,\u003cstrong\u003e His Name Is Alive\u003c\/strong\u003e, \u003cstrong\u003eSilent Hill 2 OST\u003c\/strong\u003e, and death metal bands I can’t name. Released in the last weeks of 2025, it was obviously missed by all the EOTY lists published before the actual end of the year, but it effortlessly made it to my top 5... Highest recommendation, especially in its luxurious and incredibly well-sounding colored vinyl form.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/i\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eI know that I'm missing out on so many of the clues that'd help me understand JS Donny's creative process, as she's quite obviously influenced by a wide range of extreme rock genres - from screamo to doom metal - a musical background that I don't have. But she channels these influences into a territory I feel like I know well, that of slightly desperate loner folk, championed by the likes of \u003cstrong\u003eNick Drake\u003c\/strong\u003e or \u003cstrong\u003eElliott Smith\u003c\/strong\u003e, a long continuum of tightly arranged songs, strictly relying on the guitar\/voice pair, that\u003cspan lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\"\u003e projects the listener in decaying cities and dark fantasy settings - \u003cstrong\u003eBloodborne\u003c\/strong\u003e’s \u003cem\u003eHemwick Charnel Lane \u003c\/em\u003eor \u003cstrong\u003eDark Soul\u003c\/strong\u003e's \u003cem\u003eDarkroot Garden\u003c\/em\u003e - places both terrifying and soothing.
